I think most people are aware that lemon, as in the fruit, is super versatile. But lemon essential oil is has even more uses. This versatile oil can be used for skin care, cleaning, and to support healthy bodies.
So let’s get started! Take a look at my video below.
5 Ways To Use Lemon Essential Oil.
What IS Lemon Essential Oil?
Lemon essential oil is, by far, one of the most popular and commonly used essential oils available, and that’s for very good reason.
Lemon oil has so many uses! It’s also one of the most affordable oils.
Lemon essential oil is extracted from the lemon rinds, or peel of the lemon. The lemon rinds are cold pressed to produce lemon essential oil.
🍋 The lemon essential oil is the stuff that squirts out of the lemon skin when you squeeze it. 🍋
Cold pressing is typically used to create citrus essential oils, and uses high mechanical pressure to produce oil from the lemon rind. While other distillation processes use heat, the process of cold pressing merely squeezes the oil from the rind with the help of mechanical pressure.
🍋 That’s the stuff that you get on your fingers when you squeeze the lemon skin! 🍋
Fun Fact: It typically takes around 75 lemons to fill one 15mL bottle of doTERRA essential oil!
Now let’s look at a few ways to use lemon essential oil.
1. Use Lemon Essential Oil In Your Drinking Water.
Add one to two drops of Lemon oil to your water for a refreshing taste or as an alternative to sodas and sugary drinks. When taken internally, Lemon essential oil naturally cleanses the body and aids in digestion.
You can even add a drop of Lemon oil and sliced fruit to your water for a delicious infused flavor.
Also, when seasonal changes start to bother you, try taking Lemon essential oil internally to assist with seasonal respiratory discomfort.
NOTE: Please do not use essential oils in plastic, or polystyrene bottles or cups when consuming them. Always use ceramic, glass or steel, as essential oils will break down the plastic and you will be drinking it!
2. Use Lemon Essential Oil For Toxin Free Cleaning
Lemon essential oil has amazing purifying properties, which makes it the perfect component for homemade cleaning agents. If you are worried about dirt and grime, Lemon essential oil is the perfect solution for cleaning the surfaces of your bathroom and kitchen.
Simply add lemon oil to a spray bottle of water, give it a shake, and use it as a homemade cleaning solution when you wipe down countertops, sinks, or anything else that needs the cleaning and purifying power of Lemon.
To make the solution even stronger, consider adding a little white vinegar.
The beauty of a homemade cleaning solution made with Lemon essential oil is that it doesn’t include all the chemicals that store-bought cleaners commonly contain.
You can rest easy knowing that your cleaning agent won’t pose a threat to you and your family or your pets, because it is free of harmful chemicals!
Take a look at these two pictures.

The first is an oven tray cleaned using dish washing detergent and a steel scourer. The second is the same tray cleaned using lemon essential oil.
This is a perfect example of the powerful cleaning ability of lemon essential oil. 😯
3. Use Lemon Essential Oil To Remove Sticky Residue
Stubborn, sticky residue can be really annoying! But with the help of Lemon essential oil, you can get rid of those sticky messes without hours of scrubbing or the use of toxic chemicals.
Don’t you hate it when you peel the price tag off of something new, only to find a sticky residue left behind?
This used to drive me nuts! 😈
What about when the kids stick stickers all over the bedroom furniture, doors and walls? Or your teenager leaves behind a huge sticky mess in the kitchen.
Grab the lemon oil!
Simply adding a little lemon oil to a cloth will help clean up these sticky messes (and others like them) in practically no time at all.
4. Use Lemon Essential Oil To Clean Your Hands!
If your hobby is working on your bike, car, or projects in the garage, you know how hard it can be to get black grease off your hands. No matter how hard you scrub with soap, there always seems to be some of that yucky grease left behind.
Give your hand wash a little extra cleaning power by adding a few drops of lemon oil, and then give your hands a good scrub. You’ll be amazed at the results!
5. Use Lemon Essential Oil To Exfoliate Your Skin.
Have you ever tried using Lemon essential oil for skin? It turns out that Lemon oil can help to exfoliate your skin! When incorporated into your skincare routine, Lemon oil can help give your complexion a more healthy looking glow and that’s always a good thing! 🙂
Here’s an easy way to make your own homemade exfoliant scrub.
Just combine 4–5 drops of doTERRA Lemon essential oil to a small amount of oatmeal and water. As you apply the Lemon oatmeal scrub to your skin, you will feel the cleansing and refreshing properties of the Lemon oil working to exfoliate and clean your skin.
Note: Avoid sunlight or UV rays for up to 12 hours after applying lemon essential oil to your skin as it may cause photosensitivy.
Also please note: Internal uses of lemon essential oil as mentioned on this video are specific to doTERRA’s lemon essential oil. I personally would never use any other brand of essential oils internally and I wouldn’t recommend that you do either. If you’re not sure why, take a look at the Roseman Study.
